Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour Start Date: September 1, 2026 End date: March 31, 2027 Reports To: Program Manager and/or Designated Language Instructor Program Area: Language Training – Literacy and CLB 1–2 Application Deadline: August 25, 2026, 11:59 EST Position Summary The Learner Support Assistant provides classroom and individualized support to adult learners enrolled in Literacy and Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 1-2 language classes. Working under the direction of the Language Instructor and Program Manager, the Learner Support Assistant helps learners participate successfully in classroom activities, understand lesson instructions, develop foundational language and digital literacy skills, and access the additional support they may need to progress in their learning. The position is particularly important in supporting learners who may have limited formal education, emerging literacy skills, limited experience using technology, or other barriers affecting their participation in language training. Key Responsibilities Classroom and Learner Support Support the Language Instructor during Literacy and CLB 1-2 classes. Provide one-to-one and small-group assistance to learners who require additional support. Help learners understand classroom instructions, activities, assignments, and learning materials. Reinforce lessons and concepts introduced by the Language Instructor. Support learners with foundational speaking, listening, reading, writing and numeracy activities. Encourage learner participation, confidence, independence and consistent attendance. Assist learners who require additional time, repetition, or alternative explanations. Help maintain a welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and learner-centered classroom environment. Literacy And Digital Skills Support Assist learners with basic literacy activities, including letter and number recognition, handwriting, vocabulary development, and functional reading and writing. Help learners use computers, tablets, learning platforms, and other classroom technology. Support learners with basic digital tasks, such as logging in, accessing online classes, using email and completing digital learning activities. Reinforce safe and appropriate use of classroom technology. Instructional and Administrative Support Prepare, organize, photocopy, and distribute classroom materials as directed by the Language Instructor. Assist with setting up the classroom, equipment, and learning activities. Help organize learner files, resources, and classroom supplies. Support the collection of attendance, participation, and learner progress information. Communicate learner needs, participation concerns and observed barriers to the Language Instructor. Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding learner information. Participate in relevant staff meetings, orientation or training sessions, as required. Follow organizational policies, program guidelines, and funder requirements. Learner Engagement and Referral Support Build positive and professional relationships with learners. Identify learners who may require additional academic, settlement, accessibility or technological support and bring these needs to the attention of the Language Instructor or Program Manager. Provide general information about available organizational services and support learners in connecting with appropriate staff. Promote an inclusive learning environment that respects diverse cultures, identities, abilities and lived experiences. Qualifications Post-secondary education or training in education, adult education, English-language instruction, social services, community services or a related field is preferred. Experience supporting adult learners, newcomers, English-language learners or individuals with emerging literacy skills. Experience providing one-to-one or small-group learning support is an asset. Familiarity with the Canadian Language Benchmarks and adult language-training programs is an asset. Basic knowledge of literacy development and learner-centred instructional practices. Comfortable assisting learners with computers, email, online learning platforms and basic digital skills. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Demonstrated patience, empathy, cultural sensitivity and ability to explain information clearly. Ability to work effectively with learners from diverse cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and protect confidential information. Ability to work collaboratively with instructors, program staff and volunteers. A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check may be required. Working Conditions The position requires 12 hours of work per week for a period of 30 weeks. The work schedule will be based on the timetable of the assigned Literacy and CLB 1-2 classes. Work may be delivered in person, virtually or through a hybrid model, depending on program needs. Some flexibility may be required to support classroom preparation, learner follow-up, meetings or program activities.
