Job summary

WHO WE ARE: Peripheral is developing spatial intelligence, starting in live sports and entertainment. Our models generate spatial data, used for advanced sports analytics and immersive media experiences. We’re solving key research challenges in 3D computer vision, creating the foundations for the next generation of robotic perception and embodied intelligence. We’re backed by top investors, including Khosla Ventures, Daybreak, and Entrepreneurs First, and working with some of the biggest names in sports. Our team includes engineers and researchers from leading technology companies and research institutions, and we’re building technology at the intersection of AI, graphics, and the future of live entertainment. We’re ambitious and looking to win. THE OPPORTUNITY: We’re seeking an embedded systems engineer to scale our sensor suite and innovate on how we capture data at Peripheral. You’ll work with our capture systems team and collaborate with mechanical and robotics engineers to build the best sensor setup possible to capture the data that powers our spatially intelligent models. From a software perspective, you’ll be architecting and developing our sensor drivers and network infrastructure, focusing on system robustness and performance. At Peripheral, you'll tackle challenges like precise time synchronization, end-to-end latency reduction, high-speed networking, and video stream encoding/decoding. From a hardware perspective, you'll be researching and evaluating new sensor setups and capture modalities, and designing PCBs for custom power delivery, communication, and camera gimbal solutions. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: You thrive in a high agency environment, owning your own outcomes with a bias to action. You’ve got a keen eye for detail, thinking ahead about potential failure cases, and planning the infrastructure and tooling to prevent them. You’ve designed mechatronics systems before - owning the design and bring-up from component selection to production-grade sensor and actuator programming. You specialize in data capture and can debate the tradeoffs between different robotic sensors. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: * Architect and develop sensor drivers and network infrastructure, including onboarding new sensors, selecting new compute architectures, and optimizing the data transfer between the two. * Build and maintain sensor firmware and network infrastructure for high-speed, multi-sensor data capture, addressing time synchronization and latency reduction. * Research, evaluate, and bench-test sensors and hardware components (RGB cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic, etc.) for integration into our core capture suite. * Design circuit boards for custom mechatronics components and sensor peripherals. * Collaborate with cross-functional software and hardware teams to innovate data capture methodologies at small and large scales. REQUIREMENTS: * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. * 3+ years of professional experience in embedded software development and building production-grade drivers. * Expert-level proficiency in C++ and Python for high-performance systems, and you know your way around Linux systems. * Experience with high-precision time synchronization (understanding of ptp/ntp protocols) for multi-sensor data capture. * Strong understanding of how different sensors work e.g. RGB cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, IMU etc. and how to integrate them together * Experience in building custom PCBs * Candidates must have the legal right to work in Canada and be willing to relocate to Toronto for an in-office role. At this time, we are unable to provide immigration sponsorship. NICE TO HAVE: * Strong understanding of communication protocols, such as HTTP and TCP, and hardware level buses like I2C, SPI, CAN, or MIPI. * Strong understanding of video encoding and decoding standards (e.g., H.264, H.265, AV1). * Experience with Hardware-in-loop / Processor-in-loop testing methodologies, * Familiarity with computer vision fundamentals (camera calibration, object detection, motion capture) WHY YOU'LL LOVE WORKING HERE: * Competitive equity package as an early team member. * Annual salary of $100K–$150K CAD plus performance bonuses, commensurate with experience. * Unparalleled access to premier global sporting events and iconic venues. * Full ownership of high-impact projects shaping the future of spatial intelligence and 3D media. * Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO). * Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and wellness benefits.
