You will be the mechanical designer for multiple modules on our instrumentation platforms, owning execution from early concept through production release. Description: Serve as the mechanical designer for assigned modules of the research platform, owning the design from concept through release. Generate and maintain SolidWorks assemblies, parts, drawings, and BOMs, with SolidWorks PDM as the system of record. Participate in mechanical architecture decisions, weighing in on component and material selection, tolerance stacks, GD&T, DFM, and DFA. Build, test, and debug your own hardware prototypes alongside the R&D team. Lead design reviews and produce the technical artifacts (for example trade studies, specifications, drawings, ECOs, and validation plans) required for design release. Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and contract manufacturers to take designs from one-off prototype to repeatable, manufacturable products. Execute Verification and Validation testing and full system operation to qualify designs and ensure fit for purpose. Develop test methods and jigs as required to execute V&V testing. Complete Sustaining Engineering tasks: root-cause field and production issues, drive corrective actions, and execute design changes through controlled processes. Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, and validation engineers to integrate subsystems into reliable instruments. Minimum Qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline. 5+ years of mechanical design and product development experience, including designs you have personally released to production. Proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, including large and complex assemblies, top-down design, configurations, weldments, and drawing automation. Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, and stack-up methodology. Demonstrated experience designing for manufacturability across CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, casting, and common fabrication processes. Hands-on experience building, instrumenting, and debugging prototype hardware. Strong written and verbal communication; ability to produce clear, decision-grade technical documentation.
