Company Description The Student Legal Fund Society is an independent non-profit founded in 1998 to support strategic litigation, advocacy, and lobbying aimed at improving education and access to education at UBC. It focuses on legal matters that set broad precedent and affect UBC students, including issues of educational policy and student rights. The Society operates with a strong student-centered mandate, ensuring that initiatives reflect the needs and concerns of the UBC community. Its work is funded by a $1/year membership fee collected from each UBC student, creating a sustainable and student-driven resource for legal action and advocacy. Role Description The Litigation Committee Member is an as-needed, remote volunteer role at a UBC student organization. This position involves reviewing and assessing potential cases for their legal merit, likelihood of victory, and likelihood of setting precedent that positively impacts students. Committee members collaborate with other members to evaluate the merits of proposed action and make recommendations to the SLFS Board of Directors on funding and support. It is expected that members of this committee will meet less than once a month, though meetings may be more frequent if high case volumes justify it. Qualifications Current law student, articling student or practising lawyer. Experience or coursework in areas such as administrative law, constitutional law, or education law is an asset. Ability to write reasons for decision that are clear to non-legal audiences. Capacity for ethical decision-making, sound judgment, and maintaining confidentiality. Effective collaboration skills, including working in committees and contributing to consensus-building. Familiarity with student governance, advocacy, or non-profit organizations, preferably in a post-secondary context.

Requirements

Applicants must be current law students, articling students, or practising lawyers; experience or coursework in administrative, constitutional, or education law is an asset. Candidates should be able to write clear reasons for non-legal audiences, exercise ethical judgment and confidentiality, collaborate effectively, and ideally have familiarity with student governance, advocacy, or post-secondary non-profits.
