Job Description: Definition of Work The Cook is a team member of the Wiseman Centre, a faith-based shelter, who is responsible to provide healthy well balanced meals to residents of The Wiseman Centre. Execution of Position The primary focus of the Cook is to ensure the provision of balanced meals as per the menu which follows the Canadian Food Guide standards. The Cook is responsible for the safe handling and cooking of food as per the Canadian Food safe guidelines. Illustrative Examples of Work/Expectations Responsible for keeping the Kitchen, dining area, pantries and food storage in a clean and sanitary condition. Plan and develop recipes and menus that will provide well balanced meals to the clients Ability to prepare a variety of foods as stated on the menu in a timely manner for a population of 30-40 people on a regular basis or for special guests and functions (such as community partner functions, former resident days, Christmas parties, etc.) as requested by management. Responsible to practice portion control at each meal so as to minimize waste. Responsible for ordering kitchen supplies, inspecting the supplies upon arrival to ensure that the food is of good quality and the quantity is correct. Responsible for inventory control, inspection of supplies, equipment and work areas to ensure conformity to established standards. Responsible to supervise any and all activity in the kitchen and food storage areas. Monitor sanitation practices to ensure that any staff or resident follow standards and regulations as it pertains to this position. Other duties as assigned by Management which is deemed necessary for the smooth operation of the Kitchen and Food Storage areas. Desirable Experience and Training Diploma or certificate from a cooking program or equivalent experience Minimum of 1 year experience cooking for groups Completion of food safety certificate Valid driver's license required (recent driver’s abstract) Basic computer skills required (online ordering of groceries) Valid CPR/First Aid certificate Strong service ethic and friendly disposition a must Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset Must have ability to provide work direction Must have a strong ability to relate well to people; must understand and maintain clientele/worker boundaries Must be suitable to work with disadvantaged and challenging individuals; Must have ability to work independently Crisis Intervention Skills Training an asset Must provide a record of a recent Criminal History check Hours of Work 9:30AM-5:30PM This is a Temporary- Part Time Position Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $19.04 to $19.04 with a maximum of $19.04. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
