Description Postdoctoral Scholar position Area: Streamlining LCA and TEA of early stage technologies Duration: One year, with possibility of renewal Start date: Immediate Salary: $65,000 CAD per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for one (1) Postdoctoral Scholar focusing on the integration of optimization techniques and life cycle assessment. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be housed in the Department of Civil or Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. They will be part of an interdisciplinary team working on advancing next-generation methods and applications in life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment. Job Description: The successful applicant will focus on developing techniques to streamline life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment (TEA) of early-stage technologies. Such techniques will allow for rapid screening of candidate pathways under deep uncertainty considering the potential path to commercialization. They will work closely with project investigators with interdisciplinary backgrounds and will have the opportunity to mentor graduate (PhD and MSc) students working on system-level assessments of energy, infrastructure, and climate mitigation systems. They will have the opportunity to participate in a joint EU-Canadian research project. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, economics or related field and will have demonstrated skills in life cycle or techno-economic assessment. Clear interest in interdisciplinary work in the area should be expressed in the cover letter. In addition, the candidate should have the following qualifications: The candidate must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five years immediately preceding the start date of this posting. Experience with system-level assessment techniques such as life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment is required. Experience with developing and applying optimization tools is preferred. Strong written communication skills, preferably demonstrated by writing peer-review publications and technical reports. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group involving students and faculty from a range of backgrounds, as well as external stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
