Job summary
Conduct pre-clinical cadaveric medical device testing using in-situ mechanical testing, micro-CT imaging, and digital volume correlation, and build and validate computational models of additively manufactured lattice designs. Perform standardized testing of implant structures and materials, collaborate with researchers and experts, and mentor undergraduate researchers.
Job details
Research Opportunity: The Biomechanics of Medical Devices (BioMech Devices) Research Group develops biomechanical tools and pre-clinical evaluation methods that improve how medical devices are designed and assessed prior to clinical implementation. The group is led by Dr. Jonathan Kusins, who joined the University of Waterloo after R&D roles in the spine and medical device industry, where he contributed to the development of 3D-printed implants now used clinically. We are seeking graduate students, interested in pursuing a MASc or PhD in biomedical engineering, to join our team and lead research that deepens our understanding of bone–implant mechanics. These NSERC-funded positions are part of a broader research program that uses in-situ micro-CT imaging and computational modelling to tailor the structure of 3D-printed orthopaedic implants to an individual’s bone. What You Will Do • Gain exposure to advanced pre-clinical cadaveric testing of medical devices, including in-situ mechanical testing coupled with micro-CT imaging and digital volume correlation (DVC) • Build and validate computational models of additively manufactured lattice designs • Perform standardized (ASTM/ISO) pre-clinical testing of conventional implant structures and materials • Collaborate with experts across Waterloo and mentor undergraduate researchers Start Date: May or September 2027 (Flexible) Why Apply • Collaborative, supportive, and idea-driven research department and environment • Translational research at the intersection of biomechanics and cardiovascular medicine • Integrated mentorship spanning engineering, clinical, and industry expertise • Learn more about the BME graduate program at Waterloo (https://uwaterloo.ca/biomedical-engineering/graduate-studies) Eligibility Requirements • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering or science discipline • Direct entry to PhD from a Bachelor’s degree possible for exceptional applicants • Interest or experience in experimental biomechanics, medical device evaluation, mechanical testing, imaging, and/or 3D printing • Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills • (Asset) Prior research or industry experience How to Apply Please email the following to Dr. Jonathan Kusins at biomechdevices@outlook.com with the subject line: "Application for MASc/PhD Opportunity – [Your Name]" CV Academic transcripts Brief statement of interest (please indicate MASc or PhD) Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. We thank all candidates for their interest; however, only candidates invited for an interview will be contacted.
