Responding to the Paving Foreman, the Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of breakdown rollers, rubber tire rollers, and finish rollers. This role involves distributing, breaking down, compressing, and finishing the surface of cooling asphalt in multiple stages: breaking down asphalt with a breakdown roller, compressing it with a rubber tire roller, and applying the final finish with a finish roller. How You’ll Add Value * Operate breakdown rollers, rubber tire rollers, finish rollers, and other heavy equipment safely and efficiently * Perform regular maintenance and safety checks to ensure equipment reliability and functionality * Perform successive overlapping passes to compact subgrade and asphalt surfaces to the required smoothness and compaction levels * Adjust roller speed, pressure, and direction based on material compressibility, temperature, and project requirements to prevent ridges or surface imperfections * Operatebreakdownrollers to massage and compress hot mix asphalt during theinitialcompaction phase * Operaterubbertirerollers to further compact hot mix asphalt to specified standards * Apply the final finish usingfinishrollers to remove imperfections and achieve the desired smoothness * Train and mentor new employees on the safe and effective operation of rollers and other construction equipment * Assistwith other heavy equipment operations and general construction tasks asrequiredto support project goals * Actively contribute toVolker Stevin Contracting’s safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment What You Bring * High school diploma or equivalent * Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions * Heavy Civil Construction or labor experience is an asset * Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis Note: Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing will be required.
