Purpose The Senior Mechanical Engineer – HVAC will be based in either Calgary, AB or Edmonton, AB and will play a pivotal role in supporting engineering activities related to HVAC systems across a broad range of industrial and energy projects. This role involves leading HVAC engineering execution and overseeing high-quality deliverables for one major project or multiple smaller projects, while providing technical mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers. Key Responsibilities Prepare and review HVAC design deliverables including design criteria, specifications, equipment data sheets, material requisitions, bid evaluations, and technical recommendations for award. Perform HVAC system design and calculations including heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation and pressurization studies, ductwork and piping sizing, and equipment selection. Develop and review layouts for HVAC systems, including equipment arrangement, duct routing, and coordination with architectural, structural, electrical, and piping disciplines. Conduct site visits to operating facilities and project sites to support field engineering, constructability reviews, and commissioning activities. Serve as the primary technical point of contact for HVAC vendors and suppliers, including technical clarification and review of vendor documentation and drawings. Ensure HVAC designs comply with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and project requirements. Coordinate HVAC scope with project management, procurement, construction, commissioning, and client teams to ensure integrated and constructible solutions. Maintain a high standard of quality across all HVAC deliverables throughout the project lifecycle. Support work share activities with global execution centers and review outsourced deliverables for technical accuracy and quality. Contribute to scope definition, work-hour estimates, Total Installed Cost (TIC) inputs, and resource loading for HVAC scopes of work. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate HVAC engineers and designers. Support or act as Mechanical Discipline Lead or HVAC Package Lead as required by the project. Technical And Industry Experience Strong background in HVAC engineering for industrial facilities including oil & gas, energy transition (hydrogen, carbon capture), chemicals, mining, and heavy industrial projects. In-depth knowledge of HVAC system design including air handling units, packaged HVAC units, exhaust and ventilation systems, pressurization systems, and specialty systems for hazardous or classified areas. Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA, SMACNA, and relevant provincial and national building codes. Experience with HVAC design tools and calculation software (e.g., HAP, Trace, Elite, or equivalent) is considered an asset. Experience supporting brownfield projects, retrofits, revamps, and facility expansions is considered an asset. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with clients, vendors, and multi-discipline project teams. Education And Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or eligibility for registration. Demonstrated senior-level experience and subject matter expertise in HVAC system design for industrial facilities.
