Job details
Power Converter Controls Engineer St-Laurent, Montreal, QC Contract to Perm Opportunity 3-4 days onsite/week Introduction Brunel is seeking a Power Converter Controls Engineer to support the development, testing, validation, and delivery of industrial power conversion systems. This role is focused on the design, implementation, tuning, and validation of control strategies for power converters in a hands-on prototype and laboratory environment. Working closely with power electronics, firmware, software, and systems engineering teams, the successful candidate will develop and optimize converter controls, troubleshoot prototype systems, and support reliable system performance through hands-on testing and debugging. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced power electronics engineer who enjoys working directly with converter controls and solving complex technical challenges in the lab. Responsibilities • Design, develop, implement, and optimize control strategies for industrial power converters. • Develop and tune control loops for AFE rectifiers, inverters, VFDs, AC/DC converters, DC/DC converters, and related power conversion systems. • Perform hands-on laboratory testing, debugging, troubleshooting, tuning, and validation of prototype power conversion systems. • Analyze converter performance and identify control, stability, reliability, and performance issues. • Translate power electronics and control requirements into practical implementations in collaboration with firmware and software engineers. • Support the implementation and validation of converter control algorithms on embedded control platforms. • Develop and use simulation models to evaluate converter behaviour, control strategies, and system performance. • Support prototype development from initial control design through testing, validation, troubleshooting, and delivery. • Participate in root cause investigations and corrective action activities related to converter controls and system performance. • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve technical issues and support successful product development and delivery. Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Control Engineering, or a related technical discipline. • Strong recent experience in power electronics and power converter controls. • Direct hands-on experience designing, implementing, and tuning power converter control strategies. • Experience working with power conversion technologies such as AFE rectifiers, inverters, VFDs, AC/DC converters, DC/DC converters, or industrial power supplies. • Strong experience with control loop design, implementation, tuning, and performance optimization. • Hands-on experience with laboratory testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and validation of power conversion systems. • Experience translating power and control requirements into implementations in collaboration with firmware or software engineers. • Demonstrated experience working with power conversion systems as a core responsibility within recent engineering roles. • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and technical decision-making abilities. • Ability to work effectively in a prototype, laboratory, and product-development environment. • Ability to work onsite in St-Laurent, Montreal approximately 3–4 days per week depending on project requirements. • Fluent English or French. .Preferred • Bilingual English/French. • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink. • Experience with PLECS or similar power electronics simulation tools. • Experience with embedded control systems and MCUs. • Experience with high-voltage or high-power industrial power conversion systems. • Experience with AFE rectifiers and VFDs. • Experience working in prototype, R&D, or product-development environments. • Experience collaborating directly with embedded firmware teams on converter control implementation.
