POSITION OVERVIEW We are seeking a senior level Manager for our Materials Testing Center to support the delivery of specialized corrosion and materials studies, failure analysis for pipelines and process equipment.
The laboratory facility is equipped to assess both metallic, non-metallic materials and coatings in terms of properties and performance in a variety of process environments. This role also includes forensic services and materials consulting.
The full-time position is based in Calgary at our MTC and requires extensive experience in the oil and gas industry, energy industry, and strong knowledge and experience in materials degradation mechanisms and investigative strategies to determine failure cause in a variety of materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES Lead activities in the Materials Testing Center (MTC), identify key business opportunities and develop an action plan to support the growth of Group 10 Engineering’s lab work. Responsible for the planning and execution of technical projects, managing priorities in the lab, and allocation of resources and staff members. Provide day to day supervision and mentorship of staff members from a technical and safety perspective and support technical development of the lab team. Conduct full failure analysis studies including client interface, costing, investigative strategy and management of failure analysis steps and completed work. Support material selection projects and corrosion studies for newly designed oil and gas or chemical processing facilities, renewable energy projects including carbon dioxide fracture control, hydrogen, geothermal, or other new technology process environments. Support clients in developing and carrying out materials testing programs. Author and provide in-depth review of technical reports while offering client support in the form of meetings/follow-up communications. Manage lab safety and ensure continuous improvement of safety programs. This is not a remote work role and requires consistent in-office presence during business hours.
SKILLS Expert knowledge in metallics from an as-finished to as-welded state in terms of expected performance in sour, high temperature and highly corrosive environments. Competency in non-metallic materials including coating, elastomers, plastics and composites. Extensive knowledge of pipeline and process equipment damage mechanisms. Proven ability to solve complex technical problems with a keen focus on details. Strong technical writing skills and the ability to effectively communicate results and progress to clients of all levels within an organization. Extensive experience working in a laboratory environment with a focus on safety and appropriate behaviours in a lab setting. Ability to network and bring on new clients, and a desire to be visible in industry. Ability to lead a highly technical team and work in a multi-disciplinary setting. Strong public speaking skills and the desire and ability to publish/present technical work in industry forums. Familiarity with technical codes & standards in the fields of materials testing as related to asset integrity and corrosion. Canadian Citizen who is fluent in written and spoken English.
EDUCATION The successful candidate will hold a PhD or M.Sc. in Materials Engineering or Materials Science, however, other qualifications will be considered. Professional Engineering designation within Alberta (APEGA) will be considered an asset. Ideally +10 years of work experience in related to materials in the oil and gas sector. NACE/AMPP Certifications and involvement with AMPP is required. Formal training in Project Management will be considered an asset.
