Position Summary: The Finance Officer role is responsible for the financial and accounting processes for the Faculty. The incumbent develops and implements strategies to support the monitoring and processsing of financial transactions, and oversees budget build and year-end reporting. The candidate manages the financial operations for the Faculty and supports the recording and internal and/or external reporting of the Faculty’s financial position to ensure an accurate reflection of the financial position through the formulation, administration and implemention of generally accepted accounting principles, regulations and controls. Primary Responsibilities: Participate in overseeing the implementation of plans required for the efficient delivery of accounting services for new initiatives, including, but not limited to: Laidley Center for Business Ethics and Equity, EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion), SGI (Sustainable Growth Initiative), Institute for Transforming Healthcare, Bensadoun School of Retail Management, DataSphere Lab, and Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship. Provide financial support to these units, as needed. Supervise the daily administrative operations of the Faculty ensuring that accounting services and activities are administered in accordance with established controls, procedures and policies of the University and Faculty. Provide support for the annual budget exercise, year-end accounting processes, and monthly trend forecasting. Provide guidance and professional expertise to unit members and other stakeholder in support of activities or analyses on a wide variety of programs and processes related to accounting for grants, operating funds. Responsible for the day-to-day global operations for the complex financial management of all fund types – operating, self-funded activities, research, endowed and direct gifts of all Faculty programs, both on-site and external/out-of-country. Monitor the accounting processes; flag and investigate discrepancies or anomalies and communicate with relevant faculty, department or unit. Resolve year-end reporting issues for grants and operating funds. Prepare regularly scheduled and special, ad-hoc detailed fund statements, budget control reports, along with relevant analyses, as needed. Resolve any financial issues arising between departments, vendors, accounting and fund holders. Recommend appropriate solutions. Provide training for new staff. Prepare and present finance orientation sessions. Represent the Faculty at central meetings occasionally on behalf of the Associate Director Finance. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Experience with and a strong understanding of University budgetary accounting system. Excellent organizational skills; proven analytical, planning, and decision-making skills as well as the ability to problem-solve and meet deadlines. Must be client-focused and service-oriented with a proven ability to deal with people at all levels. Demonstrated ability to work with financial statements, prepare reports for auditors and deal with complex accounting issues. Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to work in a Microsoft Office environment using Banner FIS, Minerva, Crystal Reports, wordprocessing, spreadsheets, and database applications. Knowledge of French and English.
