Job Description
The Director, Marketing & Communications is responsible for leading the Foundation’s omni-channel marketing and communications activities, ensuring alignment with fundraising and organizational priorities. This role develops and implements brand strategies, donor communications and digital campaigns that strengthen Mackenzie Health Foundation’s profile and inspire community support. The Director oversees a team of marketing and communications professionals, provides hands-on strategic and operational leadership, and ensures the delivery of high-quality, compelling, and timely content.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
Marketing & Communications Strategy - 40%
Collaborate with the Vice President on the development and implementation of the Foundation’s annual marketing and communications plan. Oversee the creation and implementation of brand guidelines and architecture. Lead omni-channel marketing campaigns (digital, social, email, web, print, donor communications) to increase awareness and support fundraising goals. Establish and maintain messaging consistency across all communications and materials, ensuring a cohesive brand voice, reflecting excellence and reinforcing donor trust. In collaboration with the hospital, develop and execute the in-hospital marketing strategies to ensure Foundation presence across hospital sites. Develop compelling, audience-focused messaging to support broad-based fundraising initiatives, including events, annual giving, community engagement and integrated campaigns. Support hospital and foundation leadership, including the CEO, with social media presence, speaking notes and communications collateral as required. Collaborate with hospital counterparts to develop communications and community engagement strategies for joint initiatives. Lead public, government and media relations strategies for events, donor and grateful patient storytelling, and gift announcements in collaboration with hospital counterparts.
Digital & Community Engagement - 30%
Implement the Foundation’s digital marketing strategy, leveraging analytics to optimize donor acquisition and retention, build awareness and increase community engagement. Lead and evolve the Foundation’s digital channels (website, social media, email), in collaboration with fundraising teams and in alignment with hospital communications where appropriate. Manage external vendors and agency partners, including RFP processes and performance evaluation. Apply donor-centred storytelling across all community and donor touchpoints.
Team Leadership & Operations - 30%
Lead, coach, and develop a team of marketing and communications professionals, fostering collaboration and professional growth. Establish annual objectives, provide feedback, and provide ongoing recognition of contributions. Build a positive, high-performance culture based on trust, respect, inclusion, and innovation. Manage departmental budgets, forecasts, and resource allocations. Serve as a Foundation ambassador within the community and across Mackenzie Health.
Required
Skills and experience
Post-secondary degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or related field. Minimum 7 years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably in a complex nonprofit or health care environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to develop persuasive and inspiring donor-focused content. Experience developing and executing integrated marketing campaigns across multiple channels. Innate storytelling ability to craft narratives and shape content and marketing materials that inspire, deepen engagement and drive action. Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities. Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience coaching and motivating staff teams. Proficiency with digital tools and platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, social media, Sprout Social, email marketing).
Preferred/assets
Experience with donor databases such as Raiser’s Edge. Experience working with freelance and agency partners, including issuing and managing RFPs. Knowledge of York Region and/or the health care philanthropic landscape. Familiarity with project management software like Monday.com or Asana.

Work environment
Hybrid work arrangement with flexibility to work on-site and remotely, in line with Foundation policy. Some evening or weekend work may be required to support Foundation activities. Staff may be required to work at the Foundation office or hospital sites within York Region.
Compensation And Benefits
Placement on the Foundation’s salary grid, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, retirement plan, and HOOPP pension participation. Vacation entitlement and other leave provisions in line with Foundation policy.
