ENGINEER-IN-RESIDENCE (BAND LEVEL 7) Student Design Hub Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Research Initiatives and Services (1-Year Contractual Position; Possibility of Extension) BACKGROUND Memorial University is one of the largest universities in Atlantic Canada. As the province's only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the education and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador, offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to nearly 18,000 students. The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) Student Design Hub (SDH) is a cornerstone of Memorial's innovation ecosystem. It serves students from every discipline through an inclusive, interdisciplinary program designed to help them bring bold, impactful ideas to life. The mission of the SDH is to foster creative builders, and its vision is to develop and sustain a diverse and internationally recognized network of student innovators. DUTIES Reporting to the Director of the Student Design Hub and working closely with the Lab Manager, the Engineer-in-Residence provides hands-on engineering guidance, project coordination, and mentorship to student design teams. The role supports students through the full project lifecycle-from planning and design through fabrication, testing, and demonstration-helping teams turn ambitious multidisciplinary ideas into successful, competition-ready projects. The successful candidate will help elevate the performance of Student Design Hub teams by strengthening project execution, advancing engineering practices, supporting effective design and testing processes, and building student confidence and technical capability. Through day-to-day coaching and practical engineering support, the role will help students develop the technical, leadership, collaboration, and project management skills needed to succeed in complex engineering projects. The Junior Engineer-in-Residence is an early-career engineering position designed for someone who is eager to work alongside students, solve practical engineering challenges, and contribute to a hands-on, collaborative design environment. Success in the role will be reflected in stronger project delivery, improved competition readiness, and the development of highly capable student engineers and future technical leaders. QUALIFICATIONS Experience (minimum 2 years) working on student design teams, leading students, and managing technical projects; completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience in a successful student design team, including leading students and managing technical projects. The incumbent is expected to possess a strong understanding of the design process, systems thinking, prototyping, and testing, along with excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Experience in design reviews, technical documentation, prototyping, and fabrication is essential, as is the ability to mentor students while encouraging them to take ownership of their projects.
