Job End Date April 30, 2027 Dates: Temporary position October 1st, 2026 – April 30th, 2027 (7 months) Compensation: $25/hour Hours per Week: 7 to 12 hours per week, must be available on Wednesdays Job Summary: This position is primarily responsible for supporting hazardous waste pick up activities. This position will also support HSE with limited data entry tasks to support the implementations of the UBC Regulated and Hazardous Substances Management System at the UBC Okanagan campus. Organizational Status: Reports to the Associate Director, HSE. Major Responsibilities: Classification and Handling of Hazardous Wastes (under supervision and direction of the HSE Advisor (Safety and Environment)), including: Classifying Waste Requests Manual lifting of bags, buckets and chemical containers up to 25lbs Safely operating machinery including the HSE cube truck, lift gate, drum carts, and rolling carts Wearing PPE (coveralls, boots, gloves, safety glasses) Data entry of laboratory chemical inventories into electronic systems (RHSMS) Supervision Received: This position reports directly to the Associate Director, HSE with task supervision by the Advisor, Safety & Environment and will work closely with other HSE departmental staff on an as-needed basis. This position will receive general safety orientation and training as well as safety training pertaining to entering into UBC laboratories and handling hazardous wastes. Specific instructions and supervision will be provided in the expected safety practices during day-to-day work activities. Additional education and training will be provided based on work activities and as needed. Personal protective equipment will be provided to this position, as required. Supervision Given: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. Working Conditions: Typical office environment. Frequently required to attend laboratories. Work indoors and outdoors in various environmental conditions. Qualifications: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at a university. All international students applying must possess current and valid permits for work in BC, Canada. A valid Canadian driver’s license and clean drivers’ abstract. In addition, the candidate must have: A foundation in chemistry Basic understanding of laboratory safety Excellent computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel Attention to detail and accuracy Ability to exercise good judgement and initiative Good time management skills, Ability to work independently, and Well-developed oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills A background or related experience in health and safety or hazardous waste management would be an asset.

Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate university studies, hold a valid Canadian driver’s license with a clean driving record, and have a foundation in chemistry and a basic understanding of laboratory safety. Strong computer, communication, organizational, and independent-working skills are required; related health and safety or hazardous waste experience is an asset.
