Position Overview: The Transportation Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, analysis, and implementation of transportation infrastructure and mobility projects that support the municipality’s strategic goals for safety, accessibility, sustainability, and growth. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, this role ensures that transportation systems—including roads, intersections, transit facilities, active transportation networks, and traffic control devices—are designed and maintained in accordance with municipal standards, provincial regulations, and best engineering practices. The Transportation Engineer collaborates with internal departments, consultants, developers, and the public to assess transportation needs, conduct technical reviews, and develop solutions that enhance mobility and reduce congestion. The role is also accountable for supporting long-range transportation planning, managing capital projects, and contributing to policy development and public engagement initiatives. Core Accountabilities: Transportation Planning Leads transportation master planning with a multi-modal focus Develops policies, guidelines, and implementation strategies in support of Council‑approved strategies and corporate priorities Conducts functional planning, concept design, cost-benefit analyses, traffic impact, and road safety assessments Develops project costing, capital planning, and parking management strategies Plans and executes communication strategies and stakeholder engagement Development Review Reviews infrastructure plans and drawings for compliance with standards, municipal plans and policies, and sound engineering practice Liaises with developers to ensure adherence to transportation requirements Assists in preparation and implementation of Subdivision, Development, and Utility Right of Way Agreements Reviews variances and policy amendments Collaborates with Town departments (e.g., Public Works) to integrate operational input into reviews Policy & Corporate Support Reviews and develops policies/bylaws supporting mobility and parking goals Ensures engineering and construction guidelines remain current and aligned with active transportation and transit objectives Capital Project Management Charters, plans, and oversees assigned capital projects Manages procurement of consulting and contracting services Monitors project performance, change control, contract administration, and recordkeeping Closes out projects, ensures compliance, completes reporting, and transfers assets to operations Health & Safety Understands and fulfills the Worker responsibilities as outlined in the Town of Canmore Health & Safety Directive Participates in the Town’s health & safety program and complies with all legislation, policies, directives, procedures, and Safe Work Practices relevant to the tasks being performed Works in a manner that is safe and protects the health and safety of self and others Refrains from causing or participating in harassment or violence Reports injuries and incidents/concerns about unsafe or harmful worksites, acts, or conditions Key Competencies Professional Judgment & Accountability – Applies sound engineering judgment in accordance with professional standards, legislation, and municipal policy; understands the engineer’s duty to protect public safety and the public interest Technical & Analytical Thinking – Analyzes complex transportation problems, evaluates alternatives, and develops practical, defensible solutions using appropriate data, standards, and best practices Project & Consultant Management – Plans, prioritizes, and oversees capital and planning projects effectively; manages consultants, schedules, budgets, and deliverables to achieve desired outcomes Collaboration & Relationship Building – Builds effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, developers, consultants, and the public through trust, professionalism, and respect Communication & Influence – Clearly communicates technical information to non‑technical audiences; prepares well‑reasoned recommendations and contributes effectively to reports, presentations, and public engagement activities Initiative & Continuous Improvement – Demonstrates initiative in identifying improvements to processes, policies, and infrastructure outcomes; remains current with evolving transportation practices and emerging trends Adaptability & Resilience - Maintains effectiveness when priorities shift, timelines change, or competing interests arise; responds constructively to feedback, setbacks, and ambiguity Ethics, Respect & Workplace Conduct – Acts with integrity and accountability; contributes to a respectful, safe, and inclusive workplace and complies with all health, safety, and organizational policies Education, Experience & Certifications Required Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited Canadian university or equivalent Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing, licensed to practice in Alberta Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in transportation‑related engineering, including planning, design, and project management Demonstrated experience managing projects through to completion, including coordination with internal teams, consultants, and external stakeholders Knowledge and experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering, including traffic impact assessments, safety assessments, traffic management plans, and conceptual and functional design Knowledge and experience in transportation design or design review including reporting and estimating probable costs to construct Ability to collaborate effectively with team members in a multi‑disciplinary environment Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information to non‑technical audiences Highly proficient in Microsoft 365 Preferred Qualifications / Assets Experience working within a municipal or public‑sector environment Salary & Benefits: Pay Range- $101,683.40 - $107,343.60 annually. Requirements
