Black Press Media has an opening for a full-time, permanent multimedia journalist in Surrey, B.C. The successful candidate will be joining the largest multimedia reporting force in British Columbia. Black Press employs journalists across the province, generating news content for highly competitive and expanding digital platforms, and longstanding print products. The Surrey Now-Leader news team is driven by a digital-first mandate, which maintains a local focus on news, events, and issues in the community. This Tuesday-to-Saturday position is based in the Surrey Now-Leader newsroom. The Successful Candidate Will Have Outstanding writing skills for print and web. A demonstrated ability in covering breaking news in an online environment. Experience providing community news and events coverage. Excellent skills in driving website traffic and audience engagement through superior multimedia news content generation, including SEO strategies. Advanced knowledge of photography is preferred, along with video shooting and editing experience. The ability to adhere to deadlines and take direction while contributing original story ideas. The ability to thrive in a deadline-oriented environment with an eagerness to learn and develop their skillsets. An understanding of and connection to the issues facing the residents of Surrey’s diverse and rapidly growing communities is a distinct asset. Knowledge of Punjabi or Hindi is an asset. The successful candidate must be a team player and have an innovative mindset. They should be able to multi-task, write using CP Style under quick deadlines and feel confident in executing meaningful storytelling in a complex digital publishing environment. Applicants must hold a formal journalism degree or diploma. Broadcast training and experience are assets. A valid driver’s licence, reliable vehicle and a smartphone are mandatory. Candidates must be able to legally work in Canada. The starting rate for this union position is $23.11/hour, plus mileage and benefits.
