Job summary
Design code-compliant fire detection, gas monitoring, and suppression systems for heavy industrial facilities, and produce complete AutoCAD drawing and engineering packages. Coordinate system integration and project reviews, and lead or supervise factory and site acceptance testing as required.
Job details
Role and Responsibilities: System Design & Calculations: Design reliable, code-compliant fire detection, gas monitoring, and fire suppression systems tailored, as well as, develop system architectures and panel layouts for heavy industrial applications. Ensure all system architectures meet North American life safety standards and hazardous area compliance (Classified/Ex environments). Perform critical circuit and system calculations, including voltage drop, battery backup sizing, and loop capacity (NACs/SLCs). CAD & Engineering Deliverables: Utilize AutoCAD to produce complete Issued for Construction (IFC) drawing packages from initial concept through project completion. Develop Fire & Gas Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), General Arrangement (GA) equipment layouts, and panel interior/exterior elevations. Create detailed point-to-point wiring schematics, terminal block diagrams, and interconnect schedules. Control Logic & System Integration: Prepare Cause & Effect (C&E) matrices and Functional Design Specifications (FDS) to outline system operations and emergency response logic. Coordinate auxiliary interlocks, including HVAC shutdown sequences, damper control, and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) interfaces. Project & Team Collaboration: Participate in in-person design reviews, hazard assessments (HAZOP/SIL), and client coordination meetings. Review vendor submittals, equipment specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOM). Partner directly on-site with Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Process, Production, Operations, and Engineering teams to ensure seamless intersystem coordination by verifying proper system programming, wiring accuracy, and testing completion. Lead and supervise Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) as required. Qualifications: Education: Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Fire Protection Engineering, Drafting/Design, or a related discipline. Experience: 5+ years of dedicated fire alarm design experience, with at least 3 years focused on heavy industrial projects (e.g., Oil & Gas, thermal, hydro, or power generation facilities). Practical experience designing for hazardous locations (Class I, Div 1/2 or Zone 0/1/2) and intrinsically safe systems is preferred. Technical Software: Advanced mastery of AutoCAD (2D/3D). Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or MicroStation is considered a strong asset. Familiarity with 3D coordination environments (Navisworks, SmartPlant, PDMS) is preferred. System Familiarity: Strong working knowledge of major industrial fire alarm control panels, gas detection hardware, and safety controllers. Experience with Honeywell (Notifier and Scame Sistemi) and Johnson Controls (Autocall) is preferred. Codes & Standards: In-depth working knowledge of NFPA 72, CAN/ULC-S524, and relevant electrical codes (CEC/NEC). Professional Certification: Registered CFAA - Certified Fire Alarm Technician is preferred.
