Job summary

Permanent Position – Hybrid The Librarian, Knowledge Services serves as a trusted research and knowledge professional, delivering high-quality legal and business research, current awareness, training, and resource management services to support the legal and business needs of the Firm and its clients. Beyond traditional library responsibilities, the role supports strategic firm priorities through participation in Practice Innovation and Competitive and Business Intelligence (CI/BI) initiatives, helping to drive AI initiatives and informed decision-making and business growth. Hours of work are from 9 am to 5 pm. Occasional pre-authorized overtime may be required to meet business needs. Primary Responsibilities: * Reference * Deliver comprehensive legal, regulatory, and business research services to lawyers, students, and staff * Locate, evaluate, analyze, and summarize information gathered from a wide variety of sources into succinct, actionable findings in response to research requests * Provide consultation, research guidance, and assistance to lawyers, students, and staff, including advising on research strategies and supporting independent research efforts * Teach students in effective research methods while supporting them in their research assignments * Current Awareness * Provide current awareness by tracking legislative, case law and news alerts using advanced legal, news, and business databases * Develop and maintain robust value-added programs to support the research needs of the firm and its clients (such as bulletins, practice group presentations, or direct client services) * Demonstrate ongoing awareness and a strong aptitude for innovative online tools, including news aggregators, web scraping, dashboards, and content management platforms * Use Copilot and other firm AI tools to summarize and automate the creation of targeted Knowledge Services deliverables * Training and Orientation * Work with Knowledge Services staff and other departments to design and provide formal and informal teaching, training and orientation programs in research methodology and resources * Provide on demand training on various databases and tools * Support onboarding and ongoing training for business administrative professionals on research platforms and resources. * Resource Management * Evaluate, recommend, and maintain new research tools and resources, including eBooks and eJournals, online research platforms, and research apps * Creation and maintenance of Knowledge Services content on Fasken Central relevant to the office and region * Support the roll-out and transition of online platforms including password management, communication of resources to users, and provision of training * Professional Development * Engage in continual professional development; attend continuing education courses, webinars, sessions, and conferences — with emphasis on emerging areas such as AI in legal research, data analytics and competitive intelligence methodology * Maintain relationships with other information professionals and associations (e.g., CALL/ACBD, AALL) * Business Research and Competitive/Business Intelligence * Work collaboratively with business development practice leads and other knowledge services librarians to support regional strategic initiatives * Gather and acquire or monitor information and intelligence from disparate sources with an emphasis on external data and resources to support practice group strategy * Develop intelligence reports and briefing documents, as appropriate, especially on significant new clients and strategic industries and practices * Monitor news, securities and litigation filings to provide industry and practice group leaders with actionable intelligence * Provide in-depth client research to advance cross-selling and client feedback programs, working closely with marketing staff * Practice Innovation * Work with members of the Knowledge Services and Knowledge & Practice Innovation teams and with practice groups to identify opportunities relating to practice innovation supported by legal technology, automation, and generative AI * Participate in pilots of legal technologies and AI research tools and contribute to testing, training, decision-making, and rollout * Drive adoption of knowledge and practice innovation tools and projects * Other * Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned Required Knowledge and Experience: * Master of Information Studies (MI), or equivalent degree in library or information studies from an ALA-accredited program * Minimum 2–5 years of experience working in a law library or professional services library environment, preferably in a law firm * Experience in business research and competitive intelligence in a law firm or professional services setting is a strong asset * Additional degree or coursework in business (MBA) or a law degree (JD/LLB) is an asset * Expert knowledge of the Canadian legal system, legal research methodology, and resources and resources, with particular familiarity with Ontario and Federal legal and regulatory frameworks * Expert knowledge of legal research tools (e.g. Westlaw, Lexis+, vLex, CanLII) * Strong knowledge of business and industry research tools (e.g., S&P Capital IQ, Bloomberg Law, PitchBook) * Strong knowledge of content management software (e.g. SharePoint, Lucidea Genie Plus and Presto software or similar) and familiarity with cataloguing concepts * Strong knowledge of current awareness systems (e.g. Manzama, Lexis Newsdesk) * Knowledge of Harvey, Legora or similar AI platforms and working experience highly desired Pay Range $80,000 to $105,000 per annum.
