Position Summary
10(B) Criminal Law Center is seeking a motivated, compassionate, and highly organized Licensed Paralegal to join our growing criminal defence practice. The successful candidate will work closely with counsel in managing criminal files, representing clients in matters within the scope of a licensed paralegal's authority, and assisting with all stages of litigation. This position requires excellent advocacy, communication, and organizational skills, as well as a commitment to providing exceptional client service.
Key Responsibilities
Client Representation Represent clients in matters within the scope of a licensed paralegal's authority under the Law Society of Ontario. Attend court appearances, remand courts, and administrative proceedings where authorized. Negotiate with Crown counsel, prosecutors, and opposing parties when appropriate. Conduct client interviews and obtain detailed instructions.
Criminal Defence Support
Assist lawyers with bail hearings, trials, sentencing hearings, appeals, and Charter applications. Review and organize disclosure. Identify outstanding disclosure and prepare disclosure requests. Conduct legal research and prepare summaries of case law and legislation. Assist with witness preparation and trial organization.
Legal Drafting
Draft correspondence to courts, Crown counsel, police services, and clients. Prepare affidavits, notices of motion, statutory declarations, applications, and other legal documents. Prepare sentencing materials, character letter packages, and mitigation briefs. Review documents for legal accuracy and procedural compliance.
Client Management
Maintain regular communication with clients regarding their matters. Explain court processes and procedural requirements. Gather supporting documents, medical records, employment records, and other relevant materials. Maintain accurate file notes and client records.
File Administration
Manage electronic and physical files. Track limitation periods, filing deadlines, and court dates. Coordinate service and filing of court materials. Ensure all files are maintained in accordance with firm policies and Law Society requirements.
Office Administration
Manage calendars and scheduling. Coordinate virtual and in-person meetings. Assist with Legal Aid Ontario files and administrative processes. Support lawyers and staff with general office operations.
Qualifications
Required Licensed Paralegal in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. Valid P1 Paralegal Licence. Minimum 2 years of legal experience (criminal law preferred). Excellent oral and written advocacy skills. Strong legal drafting abilities. Exceptional organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple files simultaneously. High level of professionalism and discretion.
Preferred
Experience in criminal defence. Familiarity with Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court procedures. Experience with Legal Aid Ontario files. Knowledge of Court Services Online, Case Center, Zoom Court, and related legal technology. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
